Youth Pastors Paid Differently Across Denominations
Carol Stream, IL August 2, 2007--A recent national survey of Youth Pastors shows their compensation and benefits paid by Baptist and non-denominational churches is 16.2% higher than that paid by Methodist, Presbyterian and other denominational churches. The survey these results were gathered from was conducted by Your Church, a ministry of Christianity Today International, and was based on total compensation, the sum of salary plus all benefits including: housing allowance/parsonage, retirement, life insurance, health insurance, disability insurance and continuing education.
Across the spectrum of denominations surveyed, the average base salary of youth pastors was $32,398 (with the exception of the Assemblies of God, whose youth pastors’ average base salary was significantly lower--$24,820--than the others). In addition to the base salary, though, Baptist and non-denominational churches offer higher benefits, which brought their total compensation plan to an average of $53,411, compared to the average of the rest of denominations surveyed, at $44,750. The lowest surveyed denomination was Methodists, whose average total compensation plan was $41,864.
The comprehensive results and analysis for 13 church positions, ranging from senior pastor to church secretary, can be found in The 2008 Compensation Handbook for Church Staff. The complete analysis includes breakdowns based on church denomination, income budget, size, and geographical setting.
